Over the decades, hyperspectral and multispectral imaging has become more prominent and widely used across a wide range of applications such as earth observation, agriculture, health care, and remote sensing. With the potential to appropriately characterize the viewed item, both multispectral and hyperspectral imaging offers increased advantages than standard machine vision imaging techniques. The use of hyperspectral imaging capture and process an image with a larger wavelength. Whereas, the method of multispectral imaging asses an image in three or four colors. However, with the increasing demand for hyperspectral and multispectral imaging, the requirement for more efficient methods of data analysis and information retrieval techniques has become crucial to deal with the emerging volume of hyperspectral imaging data. Intelligent information retrieval is an emerging technique that applies the technique of artificial intelligence to retrieve information from larger databases efficiently. Appropriate use of such techniques significantly increases the system performance and efficiency measures. Converging intelligent information retrieval with hyperspectral and multispectral imaging relatively increases the system efficiency with improved performance. It potentially reduces the complexity of the spatial and temporal data with varying dimensionality constraints. Hence, bringing in more advancements in this regard can potentially enlighten this research sector.

The purpose of the special issue is to make an in-depth exploration of intelligent information retrieval techniques for hyperspectral and multispectral imaging. At the same time, this issue makes an attempt to bring out deeper insights into the technical aspects of intelligent information retrieval in the field of hyperspectral and multispectral imaging. Here the key objective is to intersect these two innovative methodologies and to find disruptive innovations on information retrieval using intelligent techniques such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, and natural language processing technologies. The key emphasis will be on information retrieval architecture, methodologies, and conceptual design paradigms. Researchers around the globe are most invited to present their novel and innovative solutions against this background.
